Staying Safe, Staying Strong: Personal Safety Night with Pack 337
Staying Safe, Staying Strong: Personal Safety Night with Pack 337
Greetings Pack 337 Families,
Yesterday’s Pack Meeting was all about one of the most important things we can teach our Scouts—personal safety. The Scouts rotated through four exciting breakout stations, each giving them hands-on practice with skills that keep them safe at home, in their community, and out on adventures.
Here’s a look at what they experienced:
- The Buddy System & Three-Legged Race
Scouts learned why the buddy system is a key part of Scouting. Having a buddy isn’t just fun—it’s about making sure no one is ever alone in unfamiliar or challenging situations. To practice teamwork, they paired up for a three-legged race. It was great to see how quickly they discovered that communication and cooperation are the keys to success! - Building a First Aid Kit and Calling 911
Another highlight was creating personal first aid kits. A first aid kit is one of the Cub Scout 6 Essentials, and the Scouts took pride in knowing they’ll now have the right tools to handle small scrapes and bumps when out on hikes or campouts. The Scouts also talked about emergencies and learned when it’s appropriate to call 911. They practiced identifying real emergencies versus situations where other safe choices should be made. - Age-Specific Safety Lessons
- Lions and Tigers practiced how to safely walk through a parking lot, cross the street, and what to do if they ever get separated from their family.
- Wolves and Bears focused on sports safety, including the importance of using the right gear like helmets, pads, and life vests.
- Webelos discussed how to be prepared for natural events. They discussed events like tornados and wild fires.
Each Den also spent some time discussing the Protect Yourself Rules videos (see below). And the Lions and Tigers learned about “Shout, Run, Tell” so they know what to do when in an unsafe situation. The Wolves spent time talking about “Safe Touch” while the Bears discussed their “Personal Bubbles”. These are important conversations that we all need to have with our children to help them know how to keep themselves safe in every situation.
It was inspiring to watch each Scout take these lessons seriously while still having fun with their peers.
Personal safety is a an important part of Scouting. By learning these skills now, our Scouts gain the confidence to make smart choices, the knowledge to stay calm in emergencies, and the responsibility to look out for each other. These lessons not only prepare them for adventures in Scouting but also give them lifelong habits that will serve them well in school, at play, and beyond.
Thank you, families, for supporting your Scouts as they grow in confidence. These lessons are going to help our children to become safe and strong kids. Let’s keep encouraging our scouts to remember all of these safety lessons they learned.
Yours in Scouting,
Edward Francis
